Hearts of the Country was launched in 2008 at the Farmwomen’s Conference in Brandon Manitoba. The magazine was inspired from a much-loved publication called Farmwoman (Grainews in the mid 1990's) and the popular Western People (Western Producer). With the loss of these publications, a grass-roots-rural voice was no longer heard or seen on the prairie landscape.
The landscape of rural communities have taken a hit over the last decade. A changing tide has swept the area, challenging it with drought and flooding, depopulation and growth. What sets rural people apart, is their strong sense of independence and community. They thrive in the face of adversary with incredible courage, optimism, hope and belief of a better tomorrow. It is the rural way.
